Early in the year a vacancy occurred in the Jarrow Division and Bro. John Barker was selected by the Labour Party to contest the seat. His name was submitted for the votes of all members. Out of our total membership of nearly 50,000 only 5,299 troubled themselves to record their votes, and 1,928 of that number voted against his candidature. The votes of our members who were actually residing in the Jarrow Division were even more unsatisfactory, as out of seven branches there were only 265 members voted, 137 in favour and 128 against. In view of such a vote Bro. Barker wisely relinquished his candidature.
